In 1981, along with six other software professionals, he founded Infosys in Pune with an initial investment of Rs. 10,000 (about $250 at the time). The company started as a small software development firm and grew to become one of the largest IT companies in the world. Murthy served as CEO of Infosys from 1981 to 2002 and then as chairman of the board from 2002 to 2011.

Under Murthy's leadership, Infosys pioneered the Global Delivery Model, which allowed the company to provide cost-effective IT services to clients worldwide. The company also became known for its focus on quality and innovation, and for its strong corporate culture.
